Earlier this year, I travelled to Turkey for the first time. While I’d heard plenty about its incredible contribution to the world of natural stone, I was there to meet directly with suppliers and hand-select bespoke travertine slabs and pieces for one of the Sunshine Coast’s largest and most exciting upcoming commercial projects.
For someone who has spent years immersed in the natural stone industry, Turkey is more than just a travel destination—it’s the global epicentre of marble and travertine. In fact, around 40% of the world’s marble reserves are located in Turkey, making it a powerhouse in supplying premium stone to projects across the globe.
Visiting Turkey’s Travertine & Marble Quarries – Where It All Begins
Standing at the edge of some of Turkey’s largest marble and travertine quarries was a truly awe-inspiring experience. Towering stone faces stretched as far as the eye could see, with massive blocks being carefully extracted and cut with precision. Seeing the process firsthand—from the raw blocks to the perfectly finished slabs—gave me a renewed appreciation for the craftsmanship and scale behind every piece we import.
What struck me most was the variety and beauty of the stone. The travertine I was sourcing for our Sunshine Coast project had to meet a very specific brief, and working directly with our suppliers ensured we could deliver something truly unique and tailored. While the focus of my trip was stone, Turkey has so much more to offer. Between quarry visits, I explored the ancient Roman ruins scattered across the country. Walking through amphitheatres and temples that have stood for centuries was a vivid reminder of how stone has been the foundation of civilisation for a very long time.
One of the highlights outside of work was visiting the silica terraces of Pamukkale, an otherworldly natural wonder formed over thousands of years. These gleaming white travertine formations were a striking reminder of how nature shapes beauty long before we quarry it.

Bringing It Back Home
What stood out most from this trip was the connection between Turkey’s natural stone industry and the projects we deliver back here in Australia. The marble and travertine that leave these quarries end up shaping buildings, homes, and public spaces all over the world—including right here on the Sunshine Coast.
